The Brideswell native said he made the decision due to the party's directive yesterday confirming it would only run one candidate in the forthcoming General Election.

Malachy Hand has withdrawn from the Fianna Fáil selection convention in Roscommon-Galway. The Brideswell native said he was withdrawing following the party's directive yesterday confirming it would only run one candidate in the forthcoming General Election. It was announced yesterday that five people were nominated to contest the convention.

Hand's withdrawal now leaves just three candidates in the race after Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice announced yesterday he is not contesting. Senator Eugene Murphy, Cllr John Keogh and Dr Martin Daly are now the only candidates in the running with the convention set to take place next Thursday in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon. Speaking to Shannonside News, Malachy Hand thanked those who nominated him and wished the remaining candidates well at next week's convention:
