22 empty beer cans were found in a car that crashed into a wall outside a creche in Longford earlier this week following a high speed Garda chase.
35 year old William Lawrence, of Cloncovid, Kilcogy, Cavan, was charged with multiple counts of dangerous driving, following the incident on Monday afternoon.
The Cavan native appeared in court on crutches after the court heard he suffered a broken ankle or foot as well as dislocated hip following the incident on Monday.
Sgt Jarlath Nohilly outlined to Judge Seamus Hughes at Mullingar District Court that Gardai responded to a report of drink driving at Great Water Street just after 3.30 on Monday afternoon.
Two Gardai in a patrol car responded and witnessed a vehicle being driven by the accused reverse from a property and then accelerate at speed towards St Mel's Road.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle when it approached a junction on the Balinalee Road and pulled up beside it.
One Garda stood in front of the car to prevent its progress, but the court heard the vehicle reversed on the kerb.
Another Garda reached into the vehicle in an attempt to stop its progress but the vehicle moved away and the Garda suffered a broken wrist as result.
The vehicle then progressed into a series of housing estates in Ardnacassa with Gardai in pursuit before the patrol car was damaged following a collision between the vehicles.
The car eventually came to a stop after it drove into a wall outside Longford Women's Link with Sgt Nohilly explaining that there were no brake marks or attempt to stop identified before the collision resulting in the accused hitting his head off the windscreen and the passenger seat.
The court heard he suffered serious injuries and spent two days in hospital before his arrest.
In an interview with Gardai following his arrest after being released from hospital, he outlined he drove to Longford to see his brother as he was feeling a bit depressed.
When he did not meet his brother he began drinking and was later involved in the alleged incident.
He was charged with six counts of dangerous driving, failure to have insurance or his driving licence as well as a drive off offence at a petrol station in Ballinalee earlier on Monday.
He made no response when charged at 1.40am this morning.
He was refused bail after a number of Garda objections and was remanded in custody to Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.
