A Chinese national accused of arson that caused over €3 million in damages to Longford Town has been further charged.
Guo Zhong Chen, of 9 Belvedere Terrace, Mullingar, had previously been charged with arson in relation to the Grafton Court Fire in Longford Town on July 28.
At a sitting of Longford District Court today, the man in his 50s was further charged with criminal damage in relation to an incident on a separate date to the fire.
The charge refers to the alleged damage of a vehicle at Townparks in Longford on the 7th of July.
Judge Bernadette Owens heard details of Mr Chen's arrest and caution this morning.
According to Gardaí, the accused responded to the charge stating ''I didn't do it'', ''How do you know it was me'' and ''That guy was wearing a hoody''.
Gardaí confirmed that they have received directions from the DPP to prosecute the case in the Circuit Court.
The state confirmed the book of evidence would be ready in early November and would be brought before the court as soon as possible.
Following the new charge, solicitor for the defence, John Shanley, stated that Mr Chen was not seeking bail and also informed the court that his client had difficulty with reading Chinese.
He stated a interpreter would translate and dictate the disclosures from the state and requested that Mr Chen be allowed a audio recording device in prison to listen to the evidence.
Judge Owens stated the provision of such a device was not in her power, but she would recommend to the Prison Service that it be facilitated.
Guo Zhong Chen will re-appear at Harristown District Court on Friday via Video link.
