A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his Longford girlfriend in New York last weekend.
The court has heard it was an "unprovoked" attack and a "devastating loss" for her family.
36-year-old Marcin Pieciak, of 76th Street in Glendale in New York, appeared in court yesterday in connection with the fatal stabbing of 41-year-old Sarah McNally.
She is from Longford town and moved to New York around 10 years ago.
According to the charges, Pieciak arrived at the Ceili House Bar in Maspeth in New York at 6.30pm, where Sarah was working as a bartender.
It is alleged Pieciak then stabbed McNally multiple times and cut his own throat several times, before trying to leave the bar.
It is claimed a bar patron made efforts to detain Pieciak until police arrived.
It is alleged police recovered two knives from the ground after observing Pieciak drop them as he left the bar.
McNally was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to her injuries.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said it was an unprovoked attack and a devastating loss for the family.
She said every effort is being made to ensure accountability.
Mr Pieciak could face life in prison if convicted.
