Gardaí in Athlone are appealing for the public's help following a serious assault on a woman in the early hours of last Saturday.
They're asking anyone who was in the vicinity of Athlone Castle beside the Shannon between midnight and half past twelve on Saturday night to contact them.
Gardaí say the assault happened between midnight and half past twelve on Saturday night, and a male suspect fled the scene when another man came to the aid of the injured party.
He then waited with the woman until her friends arrived.
A man was later arrested in connected with the assault and is being detained at Athlone station.
Gardaí say they're particularly anxious to talk to the male who came to the assistance of the woman and stayed with her for a time.
