A man has been handed a suspended prison sentence for partaking in an attack on a fellow inmate in Castlerea prison six years ago.
Roscommon Circuit Court heard details of an incident in a yard at the prison in which a man suffered a fractured jaw in June 2014.
Stephen Bailey, with an address in Glenbawn, Ballybane Galway, was returned to Ireland last year on foot of a European Arrest Warrant executed in England.
The court heard that he, along with number of other men, engaged in an attack on a single inmate in Castlerea prison in June 2014 - resulting in a broken jaw for the injured party.
Bailey later absconded but was returned to Ireland last year and the court heard that since his arrest he has spent a total of 251 days in custody.
The now 31-year-old, who got bail in April, apologised through his barrister for his actions.
A number of other men, who were described in court as having been more seriously involved in the assault, have also been before the courts.
The father-of-one, who had bene working on building sites in England for the last number of years, and who is now drug free, was handed a suspended two-year jail term , suspended for two years, by Judge Francis Comerford.]
