A man in his 40s is in a critical condition after a serious collision in Westmeath this morning.
Emergency services attended the scene of the incident which occurred at Churchtown in Ballinea at around 6am when a car and a truck collided on the R390 which connects Athlone and Mullingar.
The driver of the car, a man in his 40s was taken to MRH Mullingar with critical injuries, while the driver of the truck, a man in his 50s was also taken to Mullingar for treatment, with non life threatening injuries.
The scene has been preserved for technical examination and investigations are continuing.
Gardaí are urging motorists to allow extra time for their journeys as delays can be expected and local diversions are in place but it is expected that the road closure may be lifted in the next hour.
