A man in his 70s has been hospitalised with serious injuries after a shooting in Springlawn in Longford town this evening.
The area has been cordoned off and the scene has been preserved for a technical examination.
Former councillor Gerry Warnock, who lives in the town, says the incident is "horrific".
A Garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are investigating following reports of a discharge of a firearm at a residential premises in Longford Town, this evening.
"The incident occurred at approximately 7:50pm.
"A man aged in his 70s has been taken to Mullingar Hospital to be treated for injuries believed to be serious but non-life threatening.
"Enquiries are ongoing and no further information is available at this time."
Former councillor Gerry Warnock, who lives in Longford town, is condemning the incident.
