A Longford man has been jailed for five-and-a-half years in connection with a fatal road crash in Newtownforbes four years ago.
Craig McDermott was killed following a road traffic incident on the 18th of June, 2018.
The 32-year-old was fatally injured while he walked with another man along the N4 at Deerpark in Newtownforbes.
Martin McDonagh of 82 Grian Ard, Longford originally failed to remain at the scene but later handed himself into Gardai.
The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death in June 2021.
Appearing before Judge Keenan Johnson at Longford Circuit Criminal Court today, he was sentenced to 7 years jail with 18 months suspended.
The Longford man was also banned for driving for 30 years.
Along with the custodial sentence and driving ban, the court ruled that Mr. McDonagh must stay alcohol and drug-free for the entirety of his sentence.
Judge Johnson extended his deepest sympathy to the family of Craig McDermott who were in court.
