Sligo/Leitrim TD Marc McSharry has resigned the party whip and will vote against the confidence motion in Minister Simon Coveney this evening.
In his letter of resignation the TD says he was elected to serve a democratic republic - not one which applies different rules and sanctions depending on the identity or the position of people involved.
The TD who also represents north Roscommon and south Donegal had asked yesterday that his parliamentary party meet no later than 4pm today to consider how TDs and Senators would approach the vote.
It's understood that no such meeting was held.
