The principal of the Marist College in Athlone says they're looking forward to being able to provide a wider curriculum and accept more pupils in the coming years.
The school has been given the go ahead by the Department of Education for a new school building to be constructed on the site of the existing school at Retreat Road in the town.
Principal Michael Dermody says the school currently has 540 pupils, but it's had to limit its intake to 100 pupils annually in recent years due to lack of space.
Mr Dermody says there's still a strong demand for the choice of having a single sex school for boys in the area, and they'll be able to accommodate 750 pupils in the new building, as well as providing a more modern curriculum.
