The Marist Sisters in Carrick on Shannon will be celebrating 150 years in the town this summer.
Two Sisters first came to the town in July of 1873 and the congregation increased over the following years when the Sisters became closely involved with the health and education of the local people.
A special mass will be held in St Mary's Church in the town on the 2nd of July this year and a gathering will be held afterwards in the Education Centre in Mount St Joseph.
The Sisters are also working on a commemorative book to be published later this year, and they'd welcome any contributions of photos that could be loaned to them.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show this afternoon, Sr Elizabeth Gilmartin said their work at St Patrick's hospital has been an important part of the Sisters lives for several decades….
'In 1887 they started in St Patricks hospital and they actually began with being understaffed sending up sisters to help. Then later on in 1939 they actually took over of the hospital themselves, the Martrons there, myself being one of them and they did great work there throughout the years.'
