Rents in the Shannonside Region shot up by 20 percent last year according to new data from housing website Daft.ie.
The new figures are the highest in the country, with the average rent sitting at €1,038 for Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon.
Homes in Longford saw the largest increase in rent during 2022, up 21.8 percent on the previous year, with the average cost being close to €1,100.
Roscommon came in next locally and the forth highest nationwide, with rents costing €1,094, an increase of 19.9 percent.
Meanwhile, properties in Leitrim saw prices grow by 19.4 percent, with rent costing €930
There were just over 1,000 homes available to rent nationwide on February 1st, down over 20% on the same date last year.
Ronan Lyons from Daft.ie says the rental issue is now a massive national problem:
Maybe five years ago when we were having a conversation similar to this, we would of talked about it as a problem being concentrated in the Dublin, Cork or Galway area.
Those areas are still seeing rental shortages 5 years on, but it's become a national problem and a national problem of some scale.
