Bishop Doran recently stated that the 82-year-old priest had served well beyond the normal retirement age of 75.

There was widespread anger at a public meeting in Drum, Athlone, last night regarding the decision to move a popular priest from the local parish at the end of this month.

A total of 2,300 people have signed a petition calling on Bishop Kevin Doran to reverse the decision to return Fr Michael Hickey to his order in Dublin after seven years in Roscommon.

Bishop Doran recently stated that the 82-year-old priest had served well beyond the normal retirement age of 75.

A local committee was formed in the aftermath of the announcement and the move continues to be opposed vigorously by parishioners.

Those present at last night's meeting expressed anger at the Bishop as well as the local parish priest Fr John Deignan.

There was, however, a feeling of resignation among some who expressed frustration with how the situation had been dealt with by Church authorities.

Committee chairperson John Naughton said Fr Michael was a much-loved priest locally.

Mr Naughton said that following last night's meeting, the committee would revisit the situation with Fr Michael and that plans for a farewell party were now on hold.
