Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey says he believes residents around Lough Funshinagh in Roscommon are victims of a one-sided system that presently exists in this country.
The Midland North West EU member was speaking following a visit to Lough Funshinagh last Friday when he met with local residents and landowners.
The local people have been left with an uncertain future after attempts by Roscommon Council to build an overflow pipe were blocked in the courts.
Colm Markey says while the legislation related to EU directives is being used in objections, he believes the problems don't lie at European level, but rather at Irish level when the directives by being interpreted by government agencies and departments…
'According to the conversations I've had, there is a sense of conditions here.
In order to ensure that situations like this are reviewed at the national level, I would like to redirect pressure from the European level back to the national level.
In spite of the fact that it provides for exceptions in certain circumstances, there is concern at the national level that people can take these cases without being held accountable.
The people of Roscommon suffer from a one-sided system, and when I speak to people at the European Commission in Brussels, they feel that is unjust.'
