There are 23 parishes in Achonry, but only five priests under the age of 60.

Several people claimed the amalgamation of two local dioceses is already a ‘done deal’, after a meeting in Strokestown last night.

Around 80 people attended the first of six meetings about the merging of Achonry and Elphin.

It was hosted by Bishop Kevin Doran, who has led both dioceses since April.

It emerged the process to fully amalgamate both dioceses is likely to take years.

But Elphin woman Bernadette Finnerty feels it is going ahead.

The meeting heard there are 23 parishes in Achonry, but only five priests under the age of 60.

There are 38 parishes in Elphin, but only 28 priests under 60.

Clare Kelly, from Castlerea, is concerned some churches could close in the coming years.
