A major event is to take place later this month in Athlone to mark the 100th anniversary of the handing over of Custume Barracks to the Irish free state.
A military parade will take place in the town through the gates of the barracks to mark the centenary of the exit of the last of the British garrison from what was then known as Victoria Barracks.
The iconic site was handed over to Longford native General Sean MacEoin just after 11am and subsequently renamed Custume Barracks
The parade will travel from Burgess park to Athlone castle while the national flag will also be raised on the day.
Separately, a special ceremony is taking is taking place in the former Connolly Barracks in Longford this Thursday to mark the 100th anniversary of its handover to the IRA at 5pm and all are welcome.
