Dairy farmers are facing serious consequences if supermarkets begin a milk price-war according to a local farmer.
Longford man Mike McGann says Dairy farmers cannot sustain price cuts after leading supermarkets dropped the cost of milk by 10 cent.
He's branded the move as a cynical decision by supermarkets and echoed IFA warnings that we could be faced with importing milk if the situation escalates.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, the Kilashee farmer says the price cuts will have a significant detrimental effect for all parties involved.
He's urged the those involved in the decision not to engage in a race to the bottom:
'Milk, just like eggs, is an essential product that every consumer wants to buy. I wish the supermarkets would stop and think that without milk on the shelves. They would have a lot less footfall into their stores and we need to think about this. I don't know where it will end and I don't think it will continue to drop because that would be madness.'
