Luke Ming Flanagan says his former colleague in Europe, Marian Harkin, would be an ideal candidate to replace Phil Hogan.
The Roscommon-based MEP said the Irish nominee must be someone who knows the European landscape and is well respected by other nations.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, he said not just anyone can take the role.
