Castlerea’s Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan says Ciaran Mullooly could lose out to Sinn Fein’s Michelle Gildernew in the battle for the last seat in the Midlands Northwest constituency in the European elections.
Mullooly, from Independent Ireland, currently leads the Fermanagh woman by 12,500 votes.
He is in fifth place behind Ming, Fine Gael’s Maria Walsh and Nina Carberry, and Fianna Fáil’s Barry Cowan – with all four likely to take seats.
Castlerea’s John Waters has been eliminated after the 11th count, with 17,206 votes, and the 12th count is under way in Castlebar.
Ming believes there is a 20 per cent chance Gildernew will take the fifth and final seat – and not Mullooly, from Ballyleague/Lanesboro.
He has been speaking to Eoghan Murphy at the count centre, and first spoke about how things are looking for him personally.
Cavan-Monaghan Sinn Fein TD Matt Carthy also believes Gildernew could be elected.
