Minister admits farmers near Lough Funshinagh face challenge to get basic payments

The Agri Minister admits the EU rules around grants means farmers with land underwater cannot get special payment grants from Europe

The Minister for Agriculture admits that there is very little he can do to assist farmers near Lough Funshinagh who will miss out on payments this year due to continued flooding.

Landowners in the south Roscommon area are fearful that more farms and homes will be lost to the flood-waters at the turlough unless urgent action is undertaken this summer to drain land.

Roscommon County Council has committed to developing a special " engineered" solution to draw water away via a special piping system, but the process could take a number of years to complete which locals say they simply don't have.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, Charlie McConalogue admitted that due to strict EU rules, farmers in the region might miss out on key grants unless the land is available for grazing or agricultural use at some stage this year:
