A Longford Westmeath Minister says he will oppose any attempt to bring in increased regulation on burning peat or wet wood.
Green Minister Eamon Ryan today announced a public consultation on a nationwide smoky coal ban, which could also include turf and other fuels.
Opposition parties have concerns about how it would affect the 400 thousand people who live in fuel poverty and those who have used smoky coal and other products for years.
Fine Gael Minister of State Peter Burke says while he supports a move to greener fuels, the programme for government does not include any reference to a ban on peat or wet wood.
He says he cannot support any such move unless and until clear alternatives are in place.
