More family run care homes will close in the Shannonside region if the Government don't increase the current fair deal scheme.
That's according to the Chief Executive of Nursing Homes Ireland following the closure of the third local nursing home in over a month.
Tearmainn Bhride in Brideswell has been operating since 1997 and provides care for up to 29 residents.
In a statement to Shannonside FM news, centre management stated the low fair deal rate has been attributed to making the home unviable.
The centre recently received planning permission for a substantial upgrade to the facility to increase bed size to cater for 60 residents.
Management and staff are currently working with residents to transition them to new accommodation.
Tadgh Daly says the issue has gone beyond crisis point:
"While its too late for those homes that have closed but if the government doesn't offer more in the current fair deal scheme then more will close which in turn put will put pressure on families and the communities where these homes are located in".
