A Roscommon birdlife expert admits more unusual species of animals are being discovered in this region all the time.
The fortunes of Ireland's wintering water bird species have been published for 97 lakes, rivers and coastal estuaries across Ireland.
Fifteen species are stable or increasing, but twenty are declining, including six species that have decreased by over 50% since the mid-1990's.
The survey has also revealed an increase in the presence of birds traditionally unknown in this region.
Roscommon town native Brian Burke is the scientific officer with Birdwatch Ireland.
He says the region is seeing lots of new activity.
