Over 40 long term teaching vacancies are expected locally in coming months. Nationally there are over 800 teacher vacancies as we head towards the end of the first half of the school year. Figures released from the INTO show 42 permanent and substitute teaching posts are expected to be vacant in the next three months. There are currently 9 longterm vacancies at schools in the Shannonside Region, including four in Leitrim, four in Longford and just one in Roscommon.
When looking ahead to the next school term, the Irish National Teachers Organisations are forecasting vacancies to quadruple. 20 posts are expected to be empty in Roscommon, with 15 in Longford and 7 in Leitrim. The issue is also facing secondary schools, with 81 per cent of Principals or Deputy Principals have hired an unqualified teacher in the last year.
