The majority of homes lacking Internet access in the Shannonside region are going without connection by their own choice.
New figures from the CSO have set out the reasons for locals not having the service in their homes or businesses.
Central Statistic Office data shows that in the midlands, 61 percent of those without internet have stated it is by choice as they do not need it, with that figure falling to 59 percent in Roscommon/Leitrim.
Lack of skill or knowledge in using the internet is the next most significant factor, with 27 percent of those in the midlands and 26 percent in the Midwest forgoing the use of the web due to this.
Price also plays a factor for those not using the internet in the Shannonside region with around 7 percent of people in Longford and Roscommon/Leitrim unwilling to spend money on available equipment and connection prices.
While a simple lack of services for 12 percent of those surveyed in the Midwest is the primary and only reason they have not connected to the web, with this figure coming down to 5 percent in the midlands.
