An East Galway agricultural college has been shortlisted in a bid for the development of veterinary education courses.
Minister Simon Harris has today announced that the green light has been given to Atlantic Technological University to proceed to the next stage in its application for the course at the Mountbellew and Letterkenny campus
This project will now proceed to the next phase which is the formulation of a full business case which will then be assessed by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.
Meanwhile ATU Sligo was chosen by the Higher Education Authority to have a viable proposal to deliver additional Pharmaceutical and Nursing education.
ATU President Dr Orla Flynn believes the recent amalgamation of campuses has benefited the submission.
'I actually think the way that we've developed our veterinary submission has been a real testament to the power of the Technological Universities, the coming together of the different partners across the region ,and really capitalising on the critical mass that we now have.
Just to give you a bit of background on the veterinary bid, we already offer veterinary nursing in Donegal in Letterkenny, and obviously some of our graduates there have gone on to become veterinary surgeons, we've a big interest in offering veterinary medicine.'
