It's hoped that work can begin before the end of this year on the upgrade of the N5 from Scramogue to Ballaghaderreen.
Contracts for the multi-million euro project were signed at Roscommon County Council this morning - with the Taoiseach expected to turn the sod on the national route upgrade later this month.
It's expected that works to upgrade the 34km stretch of road will take around 36 months to fully complete.

Senator Eugene Murphy is hopeful that the project could even be finished before then.
