A local man has been recognised at this year's National Bravery Awards.

Mark Kelly from Mullingar was awarded a Silver Medal and a Certificate of Bravery at the ceremony held at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park on Friday.

In 2021, Mark and his colleague Pat Weymes were fitting doors at a house in Mullingar, when they noticed smoke coming from another house nearby.

The two men approached the house and Mark pulled a small child out of the burning building from an upstairs room.

Local Fire officers commended the work of both men in the immediate aftermath, recognising the child would have died if it were not for their actions.
