Almost 9,000 people are currently availing of the Rent Tax Credit in the Shannonside Northern Sound region.
The current figures were revealed by Minister for Finance Michael McGrath who was responded to questions in the Dáil from Fine Gael TD Niamh Smyth and Fianna Fáil Deputy Barry Cowen.
The Rent Tax Credit, first introduced by the Finance Act 2022, was claimed by 7,268 PAYE taxpayers in the region that year while 1,729 have claimed it so far this year. Minister McGrath said that data for claims by self-assessed taxpayers are not yet available.
1,949 people claimed the credit in Cavan in 2022 while there have been 456 claims made in the county this year.
In Roscommon, 1,541 claimed in 2022 and there have been 390 claims this year. Longford claims amounted to 1,391 last year and 312 this term.
There were 1,611 claims in Monaghan last year and 395 so far in 2023, while Leitrim has the lowest number of claims for both years at 776 and 176 respectively.
The total amount claimed for the tax year 2022 to date amounts to €133.5 million and over €31 million has been claimed so far for 2023.
