Athlone's newest bridge across the River Shannon will begin to be installed in the middle of the town later this month.
The pedestrian bridge, which forms part of the multi-million euro Athlone Galway greenway, is currently on-site at Wansboro Park in the town.
It will be moved from that location via pontoon and barges down the river before being installed near the Radisson hotel.
It's hoped that it will open to the public fully in April of 2023.
Darren Fulham is an executive engineer with Westmeath County Council.
He says it will be a spectacular site when it's put into place over the course of around 10 days
The steel bridge was fabricated in Seville and it was delivered to Wansboro Park in thirteen separate modules.
It's then fabricated into three main elements for the bridge and it will be transported on floating pontoons from Wansboro down its final location between the radisson and the luan gallery and kjacked into postion in the last week in august and first week in September.
It's a quite unique operation and it will be worth seeking as well the centre section is floated down first followed by the east and west sections. It'll take about a week and a half.
