Parents of children with Autism are welcoming the news of a new special education class in Athlone.
The announcement was made by Longford/Westmeath ETB this evening and will be located at the Community College in the town.
There are currently 11 children with Autism awaiting a school place for the next academic year and Senator Michael Carrigy says places will be open from September.
Founder of a local support group Claire Early is hopeful this new class will accommodate up to six children.
Speaking to Shannonside FM the Athlone native says it's a start but more support is needed.
''This evening's announcement was very much welcomed. But at the same time, it's only a start. It's only one class and we have 11 pupils with no place for September. So one class will only hold six. So it is very welcomed and it's a great start. But we do need more. The children need routine and they need staff and resources that are going to nurture them.''
