A new CCTV camera to be installed at Ballymacormack cemetery will only be operational on 'special occasions'.
The Joint Policing Committee in Longford has approved the new system which will see new cameras with the latest technology installed at different areas throughout the town with also up to 12 new locations added to the scheme.
The cameras will only focus at public areas and not at people's private property, and the control tower to receive the images is to be relocated within the former Connolly barracks compound to allow direct line of sight for the control centre.
It's hoped the new system will be up and running by the middle of next year.
Chair of the JPC councillor Seamus Butler says all cameras will operate on a 24/7 basis, except the new camera at Ballymacormack cemetery.
