A long-awaited CT scanner is now fully operational at Portiuncula Hospital.
The state of the art machine was fully installed and commissioned in the last week and it's expected to deliver a high standard of diagnostic radiology services.
A temporary machine had been in place at the Ballinasloe facility over the last number of months due to the previous scanner regularly breaking down.
The installation of the new CT scanner is being warmly welcomed by Independent councillor Evelyn Parsons.
She also hopes a second scanner can be delivered for Portiuncula within the next two years to deal with a growing population and long waiting lists.
Dr. Parsons believes the new equipment will improve patient experience at the facility.
'The staff are delighted obviously , it's great for patient care , it's going to serve the wider area .
From the point of view of safeguarding the importance of Portiuncula as an essential clinical care hospital and the high standards of patients services that it provides, it's welcome news indeed.'
