An extension to the Emergency Department at Sligo University Hospital comes into operation from today.
The 3.2 million euro project consists of a new reception, Covid-19 assessment unit and ambulance arrival area as well as offices and training rooms on the second floor.
The modular two-storey building took just ten months to complete with the hospital now in a position to treat Covid and non-Covid patients in separate areas
While the extension hasn't increased capacity to treat additional patients in the ED, hospital management say it does mean that the facilities for patients and staff have greatly improved.
There's been a high number of patients on trolleys at the facility over the last number of weeks with 22 people currently waiting on a bed at the hospital today.
