It's hoped a new 40 space car park in Granard will be completed before Christmas.
Located at the rear of the Garda Station the 135,000 euro development will now go through a part eight planning process.
The site was purchased a number of years ago by the local authority from the Office of Public Works and Councillor PJ Reilly is confident it will alleviate parking issues along Barrack Street and Main Street.
He says while this is a start further parking solutions are required for the north Longford town.
The Fianna Fail Representative believes the news will increase trade for the local businesses:
It is on the N55, it is a busy thoroughfare to the north and now that Centre Parcs is open , it's bringing traffic flow in with people from the north heading south through Granard and we have to give them every opportunity to pull up and spend some time in the town to help and boost our town and it will be complete for Christmas.
