Food businesses in Leitrim providing take away will have to print their name on packaging or wrapping under new proposed bye-laws
The local authority will also ask any shop, restaurant or pub proving outdoor dining to ensure they are serviced by bins and that areas are regularly cleaned.
Leitrim County Council is updating its byelaws in an effort to tackle the scourge of littering with a number of new initiatives planned by the local authority.
Shops selling sweets or other items that may produce litter will have to provide and service a bin immediately outside their business premises as well as erect signs to encourage their use.
There will be no more tinfoil for your takeaway and anyone providing food for consumption off the premises will have to print their business name on the packing or wrapping.
Takeaways will also have to ensure that the regular cleaning of litter within 50m of the business is carried out as well as outdoor bins.
All shops, restaurants and pubs will also have to start power washing outside their premises and to keep footpaths litter-free during opening hours as well as cleaning and maintain any outdoor dining spaces that may be part of their premises.
The issues of cigarette litter is also addressed - with businesses now being required to remove all cigarette waste on the pavement and the roadway on an ongoing basis, but in any event, not later than 9.00am in all cases.
Mobile food trucks will also have to provide bins for rubbish and to keep areas near their business clean - up to 100metres away.
Fines of €75 can be imposed for any breaches as well as a harsher penalty of District Court proceedings and a fine of €1904 upon conviction.
The Council will consider any submissions in relation to the draft which are submitted on/before Thursday 15th July 2021.
