A new scheme designed to encourage consumers to recycle cans and bottles for money is unfair to those following the rules.
That's the view of Athlone man Paul, who believes the actions of the minority who illegally dump these type items will not be swayed be the initiative.
The Deposit Return Scheme works by charging anyone who buys a drink a small deposit for the plastic bottle or can container.
Customers get their money back when they return the container to a collection point to be recycled.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, Paul believes that the majority of people are recycling properly, and will now be penalised with the extra fee and the requirement to change their waste disposal practices.
Those people who dump stuff are not put off by fines, by notices or CCTV, anything like that.
They don't respond to things like that but yet the government want to be seen doing something.
This is probably the crux of it, to be seen doing something by penalising the majority who are compliant.
