The new technological university in the north-west will develop special faculties supporting the industries across the region.
Minister Simon Harris has approval of the country's newest university, which will see institutes in Galway-Mayo, Sligo Letterkenny come together.
It hopes to use university status to leverage funding for research and enhance partnerships with industries.
With the official designation day set for early March 2022, final year students attending any of the centers will graduate with a university qualification.
