A new operating model for the Donegal-Leitrim-Sligo Garda division is to be implemented.
Donegal will split from Sligo-Leitrim under a new divisional structure.
Kildare will also separate from Laois/Offaly and merge with Carlow.
The new divisions were calculated based on population and demographic changes in the regions.
Sligo independent Councillor, Marie Casserly, says the separation of Donegal will allow for a fairer distribution of services across Leitrim and Sligo.
"It's 203km from Malin Head to Mohill. It takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to drive so the division is just far too large. It's too big to manage. At least with the Sligo-Leitrim division, it can be planned for properly. So hopefully this new operating model will work for the benefit of everybody in Sligo and Leitrim because it means the division is physically smaller and it's more manageable".
