A 2.9 million euro project aimed at tackling plastic packaging pollution has been launched by Technological University of the Shannon.
The project, PerPETual, which is led by researchers at the Athlone campus hopes to create technology that will reduce landfill and allow some plastics such as bottles and containers to be recycled.
Researchers say the new machinery will be the first of its kind globally.
Dr. Margaret Brennan Fournet is lead researcher of the project, she is urging companies to come on board and help solve Ireland's plastic problem.
