A new temporary Emergency Department for University Hospital Galway will become operational in the next month.
An update presented to the September meeting of the Western Regional Health Forum has confirmed that commissioning is currently under way at the Galway City Site following a handover from the contractors in August.
The temporary ED has been established to allow for the construction of a major new development at the hospital, incorporating a brand new permanent emergency department as well as paediatric and maternity services.
The new facility will contain more bed capacity then the previous department, with 43 patient bays compared to 34 in the Pre-covid ED.
The multi level build will not be completed for a number of years, meaning the soon to be opened temporary ED will be in use in the long term.
