Sligo Leitrim Junior Minister Frank Feighan says today's launch of the new Atlantic Technological University has redressed a big imbalance.
Minister Simon Harris launched the latest Technological University in Sligo today at a special ceremony which saw people from the other campuses at Castlebar, Galway and Letterkenny taking part virtually.
The new university will offer almost 600 academic programmes from pre-degree to doctoral level, to a student population of over 20,000.
The Fine Gael TD says he believes young people who have the chance to study in their local area are also more likely to settle there as well.
This is the balancing a lot of maybe the regional imbalance that happened over the many, many decades since the foundation of the State
And I think now with the Technology University and other exciting developments, I believe that people, young people who can be educated in the university, they're more than likely to stay and work in that region.
So it's a huge exciting time for Sligo for the West and the Northwest.
