Leitrim County Council is reconstructing a road at Rinacurreen with an unusual technique.
The local community have been frequently cut off for months during the winter due to flooding on the River Shannon and standard stone could cause slip failure of the existing road.
A new design, developed by engineers and an external consultant involves used tyre material which is grouped together as large bales.
The bales are being filled with lightweight material and, when construction is complete, will raise the local road by approximately 1m in height.
The local community have part-funded the project through a Community Involvement Scheme.
