Longford County Council has opened tenders for a new pedestrian route linking the end of the Royal Canal greenway walk to the centre of the town.
The route would follow the original path of the now filled in segment of the canal, travelling under the Irish Rail underpass and terminating at Harbour Square.
Under the plans, a new urban recreational space would be developed as a space for activities including local gatherings, performances and tourism information.
Works will include the construction of a paved amenity area, a 1 km length of a 3 metre wide cycle and pedestrian path, and a fabric overhang across the square.
Tenders for the project close in February.
