A power company is planning to develop a wind farm locally which, it says, could supply electricity to more than 20,000 homes.
EDF Renewables wants to construct the 30 megawatt facility in County Roscommon.
The proposed Carrowkeel Wind Farm would be located around 14kms from Athlone town, in the townlands of Kilmass, Rahara, Longfield, Grange and Corralea.
The project would consist of up to five wind turbines with tip heights of up to 180 metres.
EDF Renewables Ireland says it intends to submit a planning application and an Environmental Impact Assessment Report in support of the project late next year.
The company says a Community Benefit Fund commensurate with the size of the final project will be established to provide funding for local community initiatives and activities.
Its Head of Development, Jenny Howard, said consultations would take place with members of the local community at all stages of the project.
Subject to planning permission, the wind farm could be constructed and operational by 2028.
