There will be no change to the property tax faced by householders in Leitrim and Longford next year.

Last year Longford and Leitrim County Councils agreed a 15% rise in the local property tax - with the money used to leverage funding for other projects.

Director of Finance in Longford John McKeon outlined that if the rate remained the same, it could be used to fund millions of euro worth of projects such as the €14 million required for the Cam;lin Quarter initiative.

He told Councillors that an estimated three million euro extra will be spent by the Council next year - with Covid 19 proving already to be a significant barrier to income.

In Leitrim, Director of Services Vincent Dwyer claimed the LPT was the cornerstone of capital investment in the county.

Councillor Des Guckian proposed a reduction of 15% in the levy be implemented due to the impact of Covid 19 but the motion did not get a seconder.

Sinn Fein councillor Padraig Fallon also claimed while his party was opposed to the property tax, he would only support its overall abolition- and not a reduction as it was a vital source of income for the council.

Roscommon County Council is due to make a decision its LPT at its monthly meeting later this month.
