No fines have been issued in the Shannonside Region for breaches in controlled breeds of dog regulations in the last five years.
Figures presented in the Daíl recently show that Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon are among 16 local authorities that have no fines against the owners of controlled dog breeds since 2017, with 2022 figures yet to be released.
While restricted dog breeds such English Bull Terriers, Rottweilers and Japanese Akitas are legal to possess, owners are required by law to follow certain rules.
These include that the animals must be muzzled when in public, be kept on short chains and not be owned by anyone under 16.
Those that break the rules can be the subject of fines from the local authority, dog wardens or the Gardaí.
Just 602 fines have been registered in the last five years, none of which were administered by Longford, Leitrim or Roscommon councils.
