A Leitrim Councillor is calling on the local authority to reconsider its burial plot policy.
Since 2016 spaces are only allocated when the immediate need arises and can't be paid for in advance.
At a meeting of this month's Ballinamore M.D. council officials stated this practice means there are no vast gaps left in graveyards.
However, Councillor Enda McGloin believes people should be able to pre-pay for a plot and be allocated the space at the time of death.
He says it would be a practicable solution for those who wish to have their affairs in order before they pass.
''You can only purchase a grave when a person dies and pay for that then. And I asked, for example, if a person could pay in advance and then be allocated a plot when they die. And again, that wasn't the case that Leitrim County Council apply in terms of policy, but I think from a practical point of view, I think if somebody wants to buy a plot, they should be allowed to do that, but not be allocated a position.''
