The main road and footpath passing through Leitrim Village will remain closed until further notice following today's freak tornado. Emergency services along with Council staff from the Road's Department and Civil Defence responded to the incident at lunchtime today.
A number of people are said to have been injured, but according to the local Authority, no serious injuries were reported. A number or buildings suffered significant damage, with several vehicles and boats also severely affected.
The main R280 road has been closed and will remain closed until such time as an assessment of the structural damage within the village has been carried out. A traffic management solution has been put in place and traffic is being diverted on alternate routes around Leitrim village.
A number of residents in the village have been offered alternative accommodation by Leitrim County Council due damage to homes in the affected area.
